In this video from Carl Oliver, we learn what a loading coil is, and how it is used to reduce the physical length of a resonant antenna.  A loading coil adds inductance to an antenna and can be adjusted to allow an antenna to cover several frequencies.  This basic tutorial is hands- on, simple, and to-the-point.
