Adding a short "rat tail" or counterpoise wire to your hand held VHF/UHF transceiver can boost the range of your radio, reduce the swr a bit, and lead to clearer communications.  The "rat tail" becomes the missing half of the radio's vertical antenna.  This video shows you a simple way of making and attaching the "rat tail" to your transceiver.  A  basic, simple way to increase the coverage of your VHF/UHF transceiver.
