One of the major problems with vertical HF antennas is the establishment of a good ground radial or counterpoise system.  According to conventional wisdom, the ground radial system supplies "the missing half" of a quarter wave vertical antenna. In this video, Stan Gibilisco (W1GV) provides a working substitute for ground radials in a small urban lot.  The key is laying down as many 10-ft/3.048 meters ground radials you can and using the tallest vertical support (i.e. mast) available. While this solution is not as efficient as a full ground radial system using 1/4 wavelength wire, it will make your HF vertical antenna perform better than no radials at all.
